Still DA or Photobucket?

Tue Jan 6, 2009, 1:19 PM
Few days ago something disturbing on DA drew my attention. I was searching for some fan art of game character which is probably well known. Fan art may not be realy creative piece of art. If its well done and not coping already existing images it is fun to draw and watch.
This journal entry is not about fan art but I will refer to it from time to time. Ad remo...

Things that actually made me to write this post were search results. After browsing 6 or more pages of wallpapers and lame manipulated concept arts from developer site, I have finaly found what I was looking for.

-My first question is: Is Deviant Art place to post hundreds of wallpapers and copyrighed concept arts?

Most of search results were in fan art cathegory. You may imagine my astonishment. I was trying to figure out why....Why do people have to post 30 or more same wallpapers, as if everybody wanted to post this wallpaper by himself.
Comments under some of them made my jaw drop. "Realy nice stuff man" under concept art from developer site. Picture was manipulated in most lame way you can do it.It seams nowadays parents give their children Photoshop instead of sweets and toys. Photoshop + internet gives almost every 10 years old kid oportunity to violate author law...
(majority of them have no idea about copyrights. Its not generalization, nothing against kids too.)

I am probably not a right person to tell what is and what is not an art. I can also imagine that those people who post manipulated stuff from games think that their creation is realy unique. Let me tell you something... IT'S NOT. If I am forced to browse threw 5 pages of search results and all I see is same wallpaper, croped in every possible variation, I am not touched by this kind of 'art'. They are only trash and dont bring anything new.
If I want, I can get it from developer site so no need to post 'em here.

-Second question is: Do you think that Deviant Art becoming Photobucket, MySpace, Imageshack, Flickr etc.?

I came across stuff which belongs there. Sometimes I get a feeling that people use DA as image hoster.

I have also noticed that those wallpapers from my search results were in fan art cathegory. Not only people upload soemthing which they didnt make but also not writing that its someone else property. It ends with brilliant comments : "I realy like what you did", "very nice" and many more. I was even more surprised when I notice someone fav those concept art wallpapers.
I change wallpaper quite often but is it a reason to upload a screenshot every time I do it?

Is it time to make more strict rules for uploading or everything should stay the way it is? Do you have any ideas what should be changed?

If you made threw this long journal entry why not sharing your thoughts with me?

Yes i do think so, just by searching or even watch the front page newest art u see why i say yes and it frustrates me.
Its about time someone makes some changes on upload rules, cuz damn alot of garbage in here (nothing against the ppl who upload them tho).
And about copyright infringement, well im not even going to start on that.....

btw happy new year <3

Happy New Year to you too brow <3

I also wanted to mention some Daily Deviations but its more complex. I have noticed, some of them were realy avarage and not original. I was trying to understand by what criterions they were picked.

I think it would be less time taking for admins who have to delete hundreds of pictures per hour with the youtube method. You submit and they look it up and verify. You stuff wont be on instantly but you bypass the rule-scrollers and the image hosters.

On site similar to Deviant Art, where I am registred, there is such thing. Rule, appeared very stupid to me at the begining but now I know what was purpose of it.

If uploaded piece doesnt fulfil artistic criterion it may be deleted by moderators. By not artistic and creative they mean pictures of your dog or kitty, picture of friends from party or trip, pictures of flowers etc which should be placed in family album. On this site I have never seen a screenshot of desktop or wallpaper from game. Such things are deleted asap.

There is also a declaration of authorship and consent for noncomercial use or lack of it. It might be very useful on DA.

Yeah im sure they have all this on plans too along with a hundred other ideas but perhaps lack people to make it or its not profitable? For Abusers are users too and they load the ads and all. Less idiots is always less money ...
